Candida Diet – Kill The Yeast
To Cure Systemic Yeast Infections Naturally you need to take a multi-approach that includes killing, starving and eliminating the dead yeast and then bringing the body back into strength and harmony so it doesn’t take over again. Reoccurring infections are depressingly common.
To Kill the Yeast
you can simply take the supplement “Nutribiotic” Grapefruit Seed Extract with Wormwood, found at your local health food store. Or any combination of Grapefruit Seed Extract designed for killing yeast. Some will have ground garlic in them, which is good for killing yeast but not a pleasant after taste, so I like Nutribiotic’s combo because it has no garlic. I prefer to eat my garlic fresh.
is an old standby, but it can be hard on the body as it’s quite acidic.
Some supporting herbs/foods that help counteract yeast are;
- Pau D’arco tea
- Reishi mushrooms
- Tea Tree Oil
is the hardest part of the anti-Candida program because it means giving up those beloved sugars. Candida albicans thrives on sugars! You’ll notice that when you eat sugar, your symptoms will worsen. This is the yeast proliferating on its favorite food.
How much sugar you need to eliminate from your diet depends on the degree of your invasion. If your life is controlled by being sick, you need to eliminate them all. If you’re simply wanting to rid yourself of a mild case, you can eliminate the worst sugars like refined white sugar, but keep fresh fruit, which is antioxidant loaded and helpful for boosting the immune system. So here’s a brief list of the worst offending foods in order of importance for elimination;
- Refined white sugar
- Processed and baked goods that contain a lot of sugar
- Honey, brown sugar, syrups and any other sweetener high on the glycemic index.
- Highly yeasted foods such as bread, pizza, baked goods, marmite or any food with Yeast in its ingredients.
- Alcohols of all kinds, especially wine and beer.
- Packaged or processed foods high in artificial flavorings or ingredients.
- Fast food high in carbs.
- Fruits and vegetables that are particularly high in fructose sugar such as grapes, bananas, yams, carrots, sweet potatoes, potatoes, beets. All dried fruits are naturally higher in fructose sugars.
- Refined starches such as white rice and white rice by products like crackers.
- Cheeses of all kinds
How long do you have to give up your favorite carbs?
For as long as it takes. For some people its just a few weeks, for others, its a few years. However, a word of caution here. I’ve witnesses many people staying on the anti-candida diet for way too long. Their lives become miserable as they become anti-social, unless they eat dinner at another Candida victim’s table.
They can no longer enjoy Gramma’s home made cake due to their fear of feeding the little yeasties. Please, do not live like this. It’s a way healthier energy to love Gramma’s cake and love her for making it, than being stuck in some crazy restricted diet that leaves Gramma out of the family loop. If you have an unusually high degree of Candida, fine, tell Gramma you’ll take a rain check on her cake. But give her a big hug for making it and do go back for that rain check.
If you find yourself on this incredibly boring diet for months on end, you’re probably not doing enough to KILL the yeast off. If you try to do this through diet alone, it’ll take forever, don’t let yourself fall into a Candida waste land, never to be seen again. Take the yeast killing supplements, eat more fresh garlic than an Italian and eat lots of high protein and fat foods to sustain you through these low carb times.
by consuming high fiber supplements like psyllium husks. Psyllium husks are water soluble, which means they absorb water, as opposed to water insolable fibers like bran, which are too harsh on the colon. This wonderful fiber from the seed of the Plantain herb, which grows out of the side walk of any wet, northern clime, will absorb the dead yeast and carry it out of the body where it can’t do you further harm. This is important if you want your anti-Candida program to be effective and fast. Note; when you stir your psyllium husks into water, drink immediately or it’ll set and become a gel. Some people find psyllium caps preferrable.
Another supplement popular for enhancing the flushing process is Bentonite Clay, a highly absorbent mineral clay that pulls dead yeast out of body. You can find this at your local health food store as ready made liquid or powder that you simply mix according to the directions.
So, what CAN you eat?
You need to eat lots of high protein and high fat foods. If you try to be a vegetarian on the anti-candida diet, you’re going to have to spend a lot of time in the kitchen making protein balanced meals which include legumes (beans), tofu, nuts, seeds and eggs. Or eat out at quality vegetarian restaurants. However, it’s been my experience as a Nutritionist, that way too many vegetarians thrive on carbs as cheap filler to their no-meat diets. So, maintaining this bad habit while trying to kill yeast, will not work. If you’re ethically or politically bound to your vegan commitment, you absolutely must focus on creating healthy meals that are protein and fat based. Eat tons of avocados and nuts, don’t skimp on this or you’ll be one unhappy vegan.
If you’re a carnivore, you’ll find the anti-Candida diet easier as you can use meat as a filler. But please, this does not mean you should stuff yourself with fast food burgers! You need quality, unfried meat, that is not from a chemically loaded package. Steam, roast, sauté or poach your meat.
Eat lots of quality fat, ie; avocados, nuts, whipping cream (hey, you gotta have some treats!), seeds, and nut butters. Buy a huge bag of raw almonds, no salt and no roasted, and carry some everywhere you go so when your blood sugar drops, you won’t be tempted by sugary foods. Use the natural fat and protein in the almonds to carry you through your hunger.
If you have systemic yeast, you’re gonna suffer from intense sugar cravings. This is just the little yeasties wanting their mainstay food. I promise you, if you can stick it out for a week or two, those cravings will disappear. You’ll no longer be ruled by their tyranny.
The way to survive a sugar craving is to eat high fat foods. Good fat, not junky fast food, deep fried, hydrogenated fat. No trans fats! Eat the foods mentioned above and the natural fats in those foods will satiate your body enough to carry you through the sugar craving, this works! And please, don’t be fat-phobic. Carbs make you fat, not good fat. The integrity of every cell in your body is somewhat dependent on your intake of good fats, especially your hormonal system.
We’re still recovering from the fat-phobic 80′s, but we’re learning, now we know it’s OK to eat good fats, so enjoy and give yourself a break. You’ll need it when you’re on this restricted diet.
